What’s New with RAMP?

Officially ending July 1st, the RAMP pilot year was full of success, lessons learned, and ended with a tight-knit cohort of excited mentees ready to take the next step in their career journeys whether it be continuing with their current employment, taking college classes, taking on an internship in their career of choice, finishing out high school, or looking further into their career interests.  After completion of the program, these mentees were able to develop their soft skills and confidence, enhance their understanding of what it takes to secure employment, and learned more about their vocational and educational options.

Before the program ended, mentees and parents visited the AWS Skills Center in Arlington, VA, where Amazon provides access to free cloud computing skills training for learners, unlocking new career possibilities in high-demand cloud tech jobs, regardless of a person’s background, education, or social status.  During their tour, mentees learned through interactive exhibits in the Cloud Discovery Space show about cloud computing and how the cloud enables real-world experiences like robotics, space, machine learning, gaming, and smart homes.

The start of the summer proved to be extremely busy for RAMP mentees.  Most of the mentees went away on family vacations, were preparing to start internships and summer jobs, as well as begin participating in other programs.  Although they had voted on scheduling their End-of-Program Celebration July 14th, it had to be canceled.  Instead, Kevina Brown (RAMP Program Coordinator) headed into the community to meet with the mentees and their families to celebrate their accomplishments.  The mentees were given RAMP Certificates of Completion, recommendation letters, and special gifts related to their chosen careers of interest. 

Before the conclusion of the program, students were able to share some advice and thoughts about their experiences in the program:

I would have liked to have more time with my mentor but my schedule during the week is busy between 9am - 5pm.

What’s Coming Up? 

ECNV hosted 2 information sessions in July so that students, families, and DARS counselors could learn more about the Ready to Achieve Mentoring Program (RAMP).  This career-focused mentoring program for students with disabilities, aged 14-22, is funded through the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) and will be offered for the 2023 – 2023 school year to eligible students residing in Fairfax County and referred by both the Fairfax and Alexandria DARS offices.

All interested students will have reached out to their DARS counselors by August.  To prepare for the next RAMP session’s Kick-Off on October 2nd, ECNV continues to recruit community partners, mentors, guest speakers, and other volunteers to be a part of RAMP.  If you would like to volunteer or donate your time and/or resources, please consider supporting our program!  RAMP is always looking for additional assistance to carry out family/student engagement activities, share career resources, offer event spaces, donate program supplies and food, etc.

ECNV is always looking for volunteer mentors who are open to assisting youth and young adults with disabilities who are at risk and in need of assistance as they explore career options and choices during their transition from high school. A good mentor is someone who leads, guides, listens, and actively encourages an individual to advocate for the things they desire. The RAMP at ECNV offers virtual and in-person opportunities to engage and assist students in a career-focused mentoring program. We are looking for guest speakers, volunteers, opportunities for worksite tours, as well as invitations to engage in the community.

¿Qué está pasando con RAMP?

Oficialmente finalizando el 1 de julio, el año piloto de RAMP estuvo lleno de éxito, lecciones aprendidas y terminó con una cohorte muy unida de aprendices emocionados listos para dar el siguiente paso en sus viajes profesionales, ya sea continuar con su empleo actual, tomar clases universitarias. , realizando una pasantía en la carrera de su elección, terminando la escuela secundaria o buscando más en sus intereses profesionales. El comienzo del verano resultó ser extremadamente ocupado para los aprendices de RAMP. ¿Qué viene?

 ECNV organizó 2 sesiones informativas en julio para que los estudiantes, las familias y los consejeros del DARS pudieran aprender más sobre el Programa de mentores Ready to Achieve (RAMP). ECNV siempre está buscando mentores voluntarios que estén abiertos a ayudar a jóvenes y adultos jóvenes con discapacidades que están en riesgo y que necesitan asistencia mientras exploran opciones de carrera y elecciones durante su transición de la escuela secundaria. Un buen mentor es alguien que lidera, guía, escucha y alienta activamente a una persona a abogar por las cosas que desea. RAMP en ECNV ofrece oportunidades virtuales y en persona para involucrar y ayudar a los estudiantes en un programa de tutoría centrado en la carrera. Estamos buscando oradores invitados, voluntarios, oportunidades para recorridos en el lugar de trabajo, así como invitaciones para participar en la comunidad.
