Nominations Are Open for the 2024 Advocacy Awards!

Each year, NCIL recognizes individuals and/or organizations for outstanding advocacy efforts. You must be a NCIL member to nominate someone for an award.  Nominees do not have to be a member of NCIL. In the event that the winner is not a member of NCIL, upon receiving the award, they will receive a free one-year individual NCIL membership. Awards will be announced during NCIL’s 2024 Annual Conference on Independent Living.

The deadline to nominate for a NCIL Advocacy Award is May 31, 2024.

Arlington Tenant Summit 2024

Join Arlington County's Housing Division for a day of workshops and targeted education for tenants. The summit will provide technical (Virginia Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, Fair Housing) and non-technical (how to file complaints, conflict resolution, communication skills) information to empower participants to address housing issues. Do you know of a business or organization that goes above and beyond when it comes to full inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace? They may be eligible for a Full Accessibility and Inclusion: Moving toward Equity (FAIME) Award, sponsored by the Loudoun County Disability Services Board.

Safe & Accessible Travel for Disabled Passengers: Share Your Story

The American Association of People (AAPD) invites people with disabilities to share their stories and experiences with a personal injury during seat transfers or with broken, damaged or lost wheelchairs or other mobility devices while traveling by air. AAPD will submit these stories to the Department of Transportation alongside their comments.

Statewide Autism Survey Assessment

VCU-RRTC Autism Center for Education (ACE) is conducting a brief Statewide Needs Assessment of people who live or work in Virginia AND educate or support autistic individuals. The purpose of the survey is to learn more about your learning and informational needs, such as specific topics you are interested in and the ways you prefer to get information about autism.

 

Even though this is not a research project, participation is voluntary. You have the right to participate or not participate. You may skip questions you do not want to answer and continue the survey. You may also stop participating at any time without penalty.

Free Speech Pathology Screenings

Early identification and intervention for speech and hearing disorders is important.  Often, speech and hearing disorders go unnoticed due to fear of being singled out or a lack of knowledge.

 Throughout the month, Fairfax County Health Department's Speech and Hearing program will offer free speech screenings for children ages 3 – 7 at several library branches.  No appointments are necessary, screening is first-come, first-served.
