Celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month: Empowering Independence with ECNV

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to recognize the contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities and promote inclusion, accessibility, and self-determination. At ECNV, we are committed to supporting people with disabilities in living independently and thriving in their communities.

What are the Medicaid Waivers?

Medicaid waivers play a crucial role in providing individuals with developmental disabilities access to essential services that support their independence. ECNV assists individuals in navigating Virginia’s Medicaid waiver programs, ensuring they receive the services they need to live and participate fully in their communities.

Types of Medicaid Waivers:

Virginia offers several Medicaid waivers tailored to individuals with developmental disabilities, including:

  • Community Living (CL) Waiver – Provides 24/7 residential support, personal care, and community engagement services.

  • Family and Individual Supports (FIS) Waiver – Offers support for individuals living with family or independently, including assistive technology, respite care, and employment services.

  • Building Independence (BI) Waiver – Focuses on individuals who do not require 24-hour care but need support with independent living, job training, and skill development.

At ECNV, our team provides guidance, advocacy, and support to individuals and families applying for and utilizing these waivers, helping them maximize available services. ECNV offers Money Matters , Thriving Solo, and Benefits Counseling under Family and Individual Supports (FIS) Waiver.

What are Independent Living Skills Training?

One of ECNV’s core services is Independent Living Skills Training, designed to equip individuals with the skills necessary to live independently. Through personalized training and peer support, we empower individuals with disabilities to gain greater control over their daily lives.

Key Areas of Independent Living Training:

  • Personal Care & Self-Advocacy – Understanding personal rights, managing healthcare needs, and communicating effectively with service providers.

  • Financial & Benefits Management – Budgeting, understanding Social Security benefits, and managing Medicaid services.

  • Employment & Education Support – Assistance with job searches, workplace accommodations, and continuing education resources.

  • Community Navigation – Using accessible transportation, finding housing, and engaging in social and recreational activities.

Through our person-centered approach, ECNV ensures that training is tailored to the unique needs and goals of each individual.
